Borage[]

Borage Scientific name Description Location Usage

Burdock root[]

Burdock root Scientific name Description Location Usage
Burdock Arctium minus[4] A green-leaved plant with large roots[5] and thick, glossy leaves.[6] Found in forests[5] The roots are dug up from the plant, chewed, and applied to infected wounds to get rid of infection. The leaves of the plant are used to help uninfected wounds heal faster.[5] Can be used to soak up blood.[6]
  • In Shattered, after Forest's wounds become infected, Blackmoon suggests that Jag use burdock root on his wounds.[5]

Catmint/Catnip[]

Catmint Scientific name Description Location Usage
Catmint Nepeta cataria[7] Has gray-green leaves, a hairy stem, and pale purple flowers.[7] Commonly found in Twolegplace gardens; rarely in the wild.[8] Cures a common leafbare disease.[8] Can be considered dangerous in extremely high dosages.[7]

Chamomile[]

  • In Chilled, it is one of three herbs used to cure the chilling disease.[10]

Cobweb[]

Cobwebs Scientific name Description Location Usage
Cobweb None Spider-silk webbing.[11] All around the forest,[12][13] even in mountainous areas.[14] Plastered onto wounds to stop bleeding.[12] They can also cause infections, so they are often paired with other herbs that stop infection.[15]
  • In Shattered, Forest applies cobwebs to Silverstreak's shoulder when she hurts it on a rock.[12]
  • In Shattered, Silverstreak uses cobwebs to help Forest after he was attacked by Northstar.[13]
  • In Shattered, one of the advisors binds Lion's ruined ear with cobwebs.[14]
  • In Snatched, cobwebs are used on Snowkit's back for the wounds he received from the hawk.[16]

Daisy leaves Scientific name Description Location Usage
Daisy Bellis perennis[17] Dark green, oval shaped leaves with a hairy stem.[17] Found in forests.[18] Chewed into a pulp[8] and eaten. One of the best remedies for joint pain.[18]
  • In Chilled, Shimmerfrost suggests using daisy leaves for Jaggedclaw's joint pain.[18]
  • In Snatched, Snowhawk makes Frostflight take daisy leaves instead of the tansy that Shadepaw was about to give her.[8]

Dock/Dock leaf[]

Dock Rumex obtusifolius[19] Glossy,[20] shiny leaves.[12] Scarce in the mountains,[20] but best found in forests.[13] Chewed into a pulp and applied to scratches.[13] Can also be used for sore paw pads.[20]
  • In Shattered, Ravenwing finds some dock leaves and the travelling trio use them to sooth their aching pads.[20]
  • In Shattered, after Silverstreak hurts her shoulder bashing it against a rock, Forest applies it to her wound.[12]
  • In Shattered, Silverstreak applies dock onto Forest's scratches to soothe his pain.[13]

Juniper berries[]

Juniper Juniperus communis[25] Fat, round, dark blue-gray berries on a thick, spiky-leaved bush.[26] Found in forests.[27] They help give a cat strength, can ease their breathing, and are good for the heart.[26]
  • In Chilled, Bluepaw and Sootpaw come across juniper berries on the Thundertracks and Bluepaw explains that the berries were for combating the effects of the foxglove, making it one of the three herbs needed to combat the chilling disease.[26]

Lavender[]

Lavender Scientific name Description Location Usage
Lavender Lavandula angustifolia[28] Purple flowers[29] with linear leaves.[28] Found in the forest.[30] Also grown in Twoleg gardens and in sunny spots with sandy or gravelly soil.[28] Eaten to help with chills[30] or inhaled for relaxation.[29]
  • In Chilled, Bluepaw gives Sootpaw some lavender to help calm her down.[29]

Marigold[]

Marigold Scientific name Description Location Usage
Marigold Tagetes[31] Bright[32] yellow-orange flowers.[13] Slightly sweet taste.[33] Found in forests.[13] Petals are chewed into a pulp and applied to wounds to help stop infection.[13] Can also be used for their juice.[32]
  • In Shattered, Blackmoon suggests that Silverstreak collect some marigold to use for Forest's wounds, so they won't get infected.[13]
  • In Shattered, Rumble uses marigold on the wounds of his group after the battle with Maggot.[32]

  • In Shattered, Blackmoon suggests to Jag that oak leaves would work for Forest's infected wounds as well.[5]

Poppy seeds[]

Poppy seeds Scientific name Description Location Usage
Poppy seed Papaver somniferum[36] Little, round black seeds. Found inside an orange-black flower.[35] Found in forests.[13] Eaten. Soothes pain and helps sleep come.[37] Sometimes used to help a dying cat go without pain to StarClan, but only rarely.[38][39] Not recommended for kits.[35] Not to be given to expecting or nursing queens, as they can hurt the kits.[2]
  • In Shattered, Ravenwing gives some poppy seeds to Flameheart to ease his way to StarClan.[38]
  • In Shattered, Silverstreak gives Forest some poppy seeds to help him to sleep and ease his pain.[13]
  • In Snatched, Snowkit is given a poppy seed for his pain from his wounds.[16]

Snowberry/Iceleaf[]

Snowberry/Iceleaf Scientific name Description Location Usage
Snowberry None Small, thin plants with tall, lean, reed-like stalks, large leaves that are spread wide, and round white berries.[40] The berries are quite small and come in clumps on each individual "branch" of the plant.[41] Each clump usually has around 20 berries.[42] Mainly found or grown in fertile forest soil. Planted in FrozenClan's sacred burial ground.[40] The only plant to combat the forest-sickness and chilling disease. Berries and leaves are eaten. Eating the leaves or berries gives the cat an immediate cooling effect, like they ate a block of ice.[40]

  • In Shattered, Silverstreak uses a thick stick that falls from a tree to help Forest's leg heal straight and correctly.[13]

Tansy[]

  • In Shattered, although unnamed, Silverstreak mentions that there were herbs that could take care of unwanted pregnancies, but Frostfeather spits at her and says that she wouldn't let her kill her kits.[44]
  • In Snatched, Snowpaw gives tansy to Moss when she complains of soreness from their walk the day prior, and she kits early because of it.[15]
  • In Snatched, Frostflight eats a bunch of tansy because she doesn't want her kits, which leads to her death as well as two of her kits.[8]

  • In Snatched, Snowhawk tries to find some yarrow so Frostflight can throw up the tansy she ate.[47]

Deathberries Scientific name Description Location Usage
Deathberries Taxus baccata[48] Bright red clumps of berries.[15] Found in forests.[15] When eaten, the berries quickly kill a cat.[29] However, the leaves can be eaten to make a cat throw up.[47]
  • In Chilled, when Brightstar is telling her story to Sootpaw, she mentions that Smallpoppy had figured out her plan to kill the ThunderClan leader, and slipped some deathberries - although unnamed - into her fresh-kill to kill her.[29]

Foxglove[]

Foxglove seeds Scientific name Description Location Usage
Foxglove Digitalis purpurea[49] Tall, purple flowers that hold small black seeds. Often mistaken for poppy.[29] Can be found in forested areas, specifically in woodland clearings and in dappled shade with well-watered soil.[50] Causes heart failure if too many are eaten.[26] They can easily and quickly cause paralysis, and lead to death.[49]
  • In Chilled, foxglove seeds are one of the three herbs needed to cure the chilling disease, and are gathered by the journeying cats.[29]
