Detailed plot summary

Silverstreak, the Clan leader, assigns Death and Frostfeather to collect moss for the Clan. Death is excited at the prospect of spending time alone with Frostfeather and sees it as an opportunity to impress her.

However, Frostfeather is initially unresponsive to Death's attempts at conversation and compliments. Death, eager to show his leadership skills, ends up leading them in the wrong direction. He decides to impress Frostfeather by catching a large mouse, but things take an unexpected turn. While attempting to catch the mouse, Death lands in a thicket of thorns, injuring his paws.

Frostfeather, irritated with Death's actions, helps him out of the thorns and discovers that a thorn is lodged in his paw. Despite his efforts to be tough and hide his pain, Frostfeather notices his injury. She expresses frustration with Death's constant attempts to impress her and reveals her discontent with toms who try to control or change her.

As they continue their task of collecting moss, Frostfeather opens up about her preferences in a mate, emphasizing the importance of being genuine and comfortable with oneself. She urges Death to be true to who he is rather than trying to change for her sake.

Their interaction takes a more genuine turn when Frostfeather helps remove the thorn from Death's paw. Death admits his flaws and fears, and Frostfeather acknowledges his willingness to listen and learn. Frostfeather suggests they return to the Clan, emphasizing that Death needs to have his paw checked by Ravenwing, the Clan's medicine cat.
